Garbage Segregation
- Garbage segregation is important and good practice even for us
- Every time the garbage collector comes to collect our garbage, we hold a kerchief to our noses and hope he goes away quickly
- Yet the garbage collector has to tolerate the smell over his full work day
- And once it goes to the recycling unit, scores of workers have to manually sift through our garbage to segregate it
- They have to separate the recyclable items from the non-recyclable items
- Small pieces of plastic like the ones left over from chocolate wrappers, tiny strips cut off from chips and milk packets cannot be recycled and have to be used in landfills
- Similarly, sanitary napkins and diapers cannot be recycled.... and these are the worst because we wrap soiled napkins into papers and then seal them in plastic bags
- You can imagine the poor worker handling this bag, opening the wrapper of plastic bag, then the soiled newspaper and finally the days old soiled napkin
- Hence as conscientious citizens, it is advisable to wrap soiled napkins in the same pack that it comes in, and then keep it separate from the rest of the garbage and hand it over to the garbage collector
- Similarly we must separate glass pieces or broken bottles and other glass ware as handlers often get hurt while sorting through the garbage
- Segregation of the waste at home itself is good practice
- All plastic wrappers must be rinsed with water immediately after use and stored separately
Plastic waste at my home collected over last 6 months-
- This habit has not only reduced our waste generation but also is very economical for the garbage handling people as they have to spend less on segregation work.... this will also prevent any illnesses from contaminated food waste
- All kitchen waste like onion peels and food waste is not thrown in the garbage bin but is recycled by making compost in my garden
- I believe that we must practice what we think is good work done by others.... I also learnt this from other sources and once I became aware, I put it into practice
Card board wrappers of toothpaste etc separately collected
Plastic strips sorted which cannot be recycled....again 6 months collection
Milk packets washed immediately after opening and dried and stored for recycling in our forest nursery to grow plants
